Bettie Rikansrud

P.O. Box 2366
Julian, CA 92036

Bettie Rikansrud received a BA in Art at the University of California at Santa Barbara.  Her emphasis was painting and printmaking.  After a career in teaching and raising three children, she and her husband, Rudy, relocated to Julian, where he was raised.  Since 2005, she has devoted more time to painting in her studio and plein air.  The mountain area provides unlimited subjects to paint: barns, mountains, lakes, streams, cattle, and mountain meadows.

Although Bettie paints mostly landscapes, she enjoys portraiture, having done that for many years.  Bettie paints with oils, acrylics and watercolor.  She is a member of the California Art Club and has been a member of the Julian Art Guild for several years.  She exhibits at The Julian Gallery on Main Street in Julian, The Banner Queen Gallery, and bi-annually with the Julian Arts Guild at the historic Town Hall.  For the last 4 years, she has been on the annual Julian Open Studios Tour.  Bettie’s love of painting has been inspired by incredible atmosphere and light which permeates the Julian countryside.

Pottery • sculpture

My enthusiasm for clay and ceramic pottery has grown through the years and become more than a love-more like an addiction to an art form that is pliable, expressive and three dimensional.

Inspired by the natural beauty of San Diego County, some of my vessels are embellished by natural materials such as pine needles, semi-precious stones and natural fires. Others are fired in the ancient Japanese Raku method, bringing forth a rainbow of color on metallic surfaces.

Just as the pottery of Neolithic times was both functional and decorative, I enjoy making vessels that can be useful, but at the same time, aesthetically pleasing.  My early training as a painter has had a strong influence on my use of color, which can be quite vivid.

My pottery business, Studio M Pottery was started in Washington D.C.. where I operated a pottery school for many years.  Since moving to San Diego 30 years ago, I have participated in numerous juried shows and teach privately in my studio.

My academic background includes a B.A. in mathematics and psychology.  This was followed by intensive study of painting in New York and ceramics in Washington D.C. and California.

It has long been a dream to have a place for fiberholics such as myself to go for connectedness.  As I become more web friendly it seems the ideal place to do this..  A way to stay connected to others like myself. As I surf around I see many of you out there, Thank you for being there..

An online store where  loyal customers. can be the first to see what’s in the works and available without coming to the shop. Although a trip to the shop can be educational and informative as the looms are always at work. My son, Skylar now a second generation weaver and I are always willing to share the process with anyone interested

In this fast paced world there is importance in keeping in touch with creative rhythm and simple pleasures the fiber arts are tactile and satisfying balance to the intangible nature of computer generated pursuits.
