Bettie Rikansrud received a BA in Art at the University of California
at Santa Barbara.
Her emphasis was painting and printmaking. After a career in teaching and
raising three children, she and her husband, Rudy, relocated to Julian, where
he was raised. Since 2005, she has devoted more time to painting in her
studio and plein air. The mountain area provides unlimited subjects to
paint: barns, mountains, lakes, streams, cattle, and mountain meadows.
Although Bettie paints mostly landscapes, she enjoys portraiture,
having done that for many years. Bettie paints with oils, acrylics and
watercolor. She is a member of the California Art Club and has been a
member of the Julian Art Guild for several years. She exhibits at The
Julian Gallery on Main Street
in Julian, The Banner Queen Gallery, and bi-annually with the Julian Arts Guild
at the historic Town Hall. For the last 4 years, she has been on the
annual Julian Open Studios Tour. Bettie’s love of painting has been
inspired by incredible atmosphere and light which permeates the Julian countryside.

Inspiration for many of my pottery vessels comes from nature, as does the
clay I use in my work. A gift for me is the beautiful red-brown clay I
dig on my ranch in Julian. After I learned the basics of how to throw on
the potter's wheel about 35 years ago, I found it to be relaxing and a
very creative and expressive art medium. The soft feel of the clay and
its pliability makes working with it almost a meditative thing.

As a San
Diego Back country native, Sandra is no stranger to art. She won her
first blue ribbon for her submission of a color drawing of a Macaw at the
Del Mar Fair when she was just 8 years old. She has since dabbled in anything
from drawing and painting to crochet and metal artwork, as well as
writing her first novel, and now has taken on photography and beaded
jewelry. Sandra
enjoys photographing scenic landscapes as well as historical buildings
throughout the Southwest and post-production painting of the photos on
canvas makes her work fun and interesting. Her beadwork jewelry can be
simple to ornate with a southwestern influence. The barbed wire crosses,
originally created by Thayer Brehm, and adorned with beads by Sandra, are
inspirational pieces to be displayed in the home, office or church. They
have been seen in many art and fashion shows, galleries, and rodeos from Palm Desert
to Prescott, Arizona.
“I am new
and nervous about showing my work to people, but my goal is to get it out
there so others can enjoy what I do as much as I love creating it”.

Painter- watercolor • acrylic Although born in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Mary Walker spent the
majority of her childhood living in Mexico.
Her family moved to San Diego when she was 16, upon her father's
retirement from the foreign service. The
move to Julian came in 1989, when she moved here with her husband and her four
children. After three and a half years,
the family moved to Ramona for a seven year stint as Christmas tree farmers,
with a return to Julian in 2000.
The study of art began in 2006, after the death of her son
Danny, who was immensely talented and was her inspiration for the journey into
art. With no self-perceived natural
talent, the jump into painting classes was very intimidating. However, she was determined to learn to see
the world around her with an artist's eye and to someday paint her children's
portraits. She persevered through seven
semesters of Palomar College watercolor and acrylic painting classes, held
every Saturday at the Escondido Campus.
Mary's paintings focus on two areas very near and dear to
her heart. The first is her children and
grandson, and the second is nature. The
paintings of her children explore familial relationships and are taken from
favorite photographs. Her landscapes are
meant to convey the magnificent beauty of the mountains in and around
Julian. Every painting has layers of
meaning, spiritual as well as concrete.

Fine art photography
Graham Wilder grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in the town of St. Joseph. Even
before picking up his first camera as a young boy, Graham looked at
everything as though framing a photograph. For him there was always a
unique and interesting way to "see" things, especially the
beauty and variety in nature. As a result, even his earliest photos were
striking in their originality of perspective and composition.
Though encouraged by friends to pursue a career in photography, after
graduating from the University
of Michigan,
Graham's life took a more inward turn. He joined a yoga ashram where, for
the next 29 years, he would discover and explore realms of subtler beauty
beyond the reach of physical sight. Graham relocated to Julian in 2005
and since then, his passion for photography has once again come to the
forefront. The result is the birth of stunning images that hauntingly
capture a beauty and tranquility that transcends nature's outward forms,
conveying a uniquely wonderful and sometimes whimsical view of
"reality." |
