Digital art quilts

Although art was an important part of my early life, my college education was in science and engineering (B.S.E. from Princeton and a Ph.D. from Caltech). I started making quilts in 1997 after a career as an engineering professor.

Because of my experience in developing and teaching a computer graphics course, it was natural for me to create my quilt designs on a computer. I currently use a variety of 2-D and 3-D software, and find it particularly exciting to create a 3-D world on the computer, from which I extract a unique image.

Collage • monoprints • assemblage • artist books

In the late 40s Helen began to dabble in water color painting. The playing became serious and by the 60s her work was receiving recognition on the East Coast. Moving to San Diego, she applied for and received a painting scholarship to Coronado School of Fine Art in 1964. This introduced Helen to oil painting, printmaking, collage assemblage and more art. Then three years were concentrated on etching. With the loss of the press she began printing using acrylics only. This process became so successful an exhibit of her work was presented at a gallery in Tokyo. Around that period Helen started studying artist's book-making at Mesa College under Genie Shenk, one of the finest book artists in our country.

Helen's work has been widely exhibited, received numerous awards and resides in private collections in the United States and Europe.

Solo exhibitions include: Knowles Art Center, La Jolla; The Athenaeum, La Jolla; Scandia, San Diego; The Unicorn, La Jolla; Sierra Club Gallery, San Diego; Art and Design Center, Bonsall; Santa Ysabel Gallery; Gallery Mondetour, Julian.

Jewelry

Surrounded by the awe-inspiring mountains and desert landscape of Borrego Springs, Kathy Pratt has found a passion for jewelry making.

Influenced by her love for nature and with her Cherokee Grandmother whispering in her ear, Kathy has found working with gemstones to be very satisfying. She combines traditional Indian techniques with gemstones, crystals, beads and wire to create necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Kathy is a member of the Borrego Springs Art Guild and the Julian Art Guild. Her work is also displayed at the SoShoMe Gallery in Borrego Springs.

You can find Kathy every Friday morning (weather permitting) at the Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market at Christmas Circle Community Park in Borrego Springs.

Bettie Rikansrud received her BA at the University of California, Santa Barbara, majoring in art and specializing in printmaking and oil painting. She also studied portraiture at the University of Alaska in Anchorage, and thereafter pursued her studies in private classes.

She and her husband have been married 40 years and have 3 children who live scattered about the world-a son working for the Dept. of Commerce in Brazil, a geologist daughter in Houston, and a Marine Officer son at Quantico, VA. Upon retiring from 23 years of teaching, she and her husband, a retired American Airlines Captain, returned to Julian, where her husband was raised and his parents still live. Bettie was able to resume her love of painting, having been inspired by such an incredible atmosphere of light which permeates the surrounding landscape of Julian.

She paints in oils, acrylics and water color, but finds the medium of water color to be most challenging. Having lived and traveled throughout the world, Bettie feels that returning to Julian is like coming home.

I have always been uplifted and rejuvenated by close contact with the natural world and its scenic beauties.
Many of my photos have been made while hiking and backpacking in our National Parks, concerned about the deterioration of this wonderful legacy and the need to preserve it for those who follow us. I hope my photos will lead others to appreciate its value and act to preserve it.

My book, "Julian Magic" shows cibachrome photos done over many years and are typical of my work. The books are available at the coffee shop, book store, and Blue Heron in Julian.

Inspiration for many of my pottery vessels comes from nature, as does the clay I use in my work. A gift for me is the beautiful red-brown clay I dig on my ranch in Julian. After I learned the basics of how to throw on the potter's wheel about 35 years ago, I found it to be relaxing and a very creative and expressive art medium. The soft feel of the clay and its pliability makes working with it almost a meditative thing.

Fine art photography

Graham Wilder grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in the town of St. Joseph. Even before picking up his first camera as a young boy, Graham looked at everything as though framing a photograph. For him there was always a unique and interesting way to "see" things, especially the beauty and variety in nature. As a result, even his earliest photos were striking in their originality of perspective and composition.

Though encouraged by friends to pursue a career in photography, after graduating from the University of Michigan, Graham's life took a more inward turn. He joined a yoga ashram where, for the next 29 years, he would discover and explore realms of subtler beauty beyond the reach of physical sight. Graham relocated to Julian in 2005 and since then, his passion for photography has once again come to the forefront. The result is the birth of stunning images that hauntingly capture a beauty and tranquility that transcends nature's outward forms, conveying a uniquely wonderful and sometimes whimsical view of "reality."
